Proposed F5J RC Thermal Soaring Class

This site is for promoting R/C thermal soaring competitions and encouraging the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (the FIA) to ratify a set of thermal soaring rules for radio controlled electric model gliders.

Why we need a new international electric r/c glider class:

  1. Although the existing F5B class nominally includes a thermal element in the multi task competition, the event is usually decided by the speed element. Thus the models tend to be optimised for high speed flight, and are not good thermal soarers.
  2. Various national rules have come into existence in the UK and elsewhere, but these are specific to each country, and many have been overtaken by the rapidly improving technology of electric R/C models, so making the required duration is no longer difficult.

In the UK we have been developing a set of Esoaring rules that emphasise thermal soaring skills over the powertrain technology and the competitor's budget. Please see www.esoaring.net for more info.

 

Other countries have also been developing electric thermal soaring rules for the proposed FAI F5J class. We will place links to these rules as we are informed of them.
